Knoxville Early Orthodontic Evaluation

Catch dental issues early

Why early orthodontic evaluations matter

Most people think of orthodontics as something that happens in middle school or high school. But the American Association of Orthodontists recommends an initial orthodontic evaluation by age , and for good reason.

By the time a child turns seven, enough permanent teeth have come in, and our Knoxville early orthodontic evaluation can identify developing alignment issues, jaw growth concerns, and bite problems that are far easier to correct while the jaw is still growing.

Catching these issues early doesn’t always mean starting treatment right away, but it does mean we can monitor, plan, and act at exactly the right time to get the best result with the least intervention.

What we look for in an early orthodontic evaluation

Phase 1 vs. Phase 2 orthodontics

Phase 1 (Early Intervention, Ages 6–10)

If a developing issue requires it, we may recommend Phase 1 treatment — often involving an expander, space maintainer, or limited braces — to guide jaw growth and create space before all permanent teeth come in. Not every child needs Phase 1, but for those who do, it can simplify or even eliminate Phase 2 treatment entirely.

Phase 2 (Comprehensive Treatment, Ages 11+)

Once most or all permanent teeth have come in, comprehensive orthodontic treatment aligns all the teeth and finalizes the bite. Phase 2 is typically shorter and more predictable when early concerns were addressed in Phase 1.

Does an early evaluation mean my child will need braces right away?

Not necessarily. Many children who come in for an early evaluation are simply monitored over time. The goal is to identify any developing concerns, not to start treatment prematurely.
